How a 2-Week Raw Food Fast Helped Me Find Peace Around Food

This is not medical advice but my personal experience. All diets and fasts should be discussed with your medical team. Fasting is not often recommended for people with eating disorders.

I panicked when I heard there was a suggested raw fruit and vegetable fast before attending a June Solstice Retreat. I’d never fasted before. After a professional career as a dancer with years of limiting my food intake and bouts of over-eating/over-drinking followed by starving myself—the last thing I wanted to do was to go through a fast. I’d never even done a cleanse.

After being a dancer, I transitioned into choreographing and my tired feet, aching muscles and starving body were happy for the reprieve. I was also so happy to be able to eat before a show and not worry about cramping or my costume fitting. What a thrill to be able to eat when I wanted and what I wanted.

What I didn’t realize was that after 15 years of choreographing—sitting, eating and only intermittent movement had taken a toll on my body in another way. All the travel took a toll. And after being diagnosed with a gluten allergy I struggled to find healthy food on and off planes and in hotel rooms late at night. When I…
