What is Love?

I’ll never forget my very first therapy session. I was asked to write down what I thought love was and return the next week with my findings.

During this time, I was also in my first long term relationship and we were having some difficulties. My boyfriend suggested I see his therapist to help us out.

Any fears I may have had about going to therapy immediately disappeared when I met Elaine. She was in her 70’s and probably the happiest person I’d ever encountered. She was unapologetically carefree and full of vitality, grace and joy. There was something magical about being her presence.

Although, Elaine lived and worked in her cute cottage by the ocean, I did wonder how she could be so happy living alone.

I spent all week working on my assignment. I wrote down things like—love is helping my Mom out, love is being a good person, love is making sure I’m not upsetting other people, love is making my Mom and Grandma happy, love is being on time, love is being kind, etc.

I was quite excited to share my findings with Elaine.
